Luis Aller: founder, director and teacher of Bande à Part Film School
Tireless spectator, film professor, film promoter, TV content creator, and film director.
Luis Aller He started like many do: as a regular at the Filmoteca, watching films until he understood them from the inside out. Then came his work as a critic for the magazine DIRIGIDO POR, and since 1989, teaching. For decades he has given masterclasses at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, the CCCB, universities, and schools, analyzing films for those who wanted to learn how to do it.
In 2009, he founded Bande à Part. Not just another school, but a place to train in all the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking with someone who knows the industry, its history, and its practical applications. Since then, several generations of filmmakers have passed through its classrooms.
He has hosted numerous filmmakers and film professionals: Abbas Kiarostami, Aki Kaurismäki, Pedro Costa, Mariano Llinás, Jaime Rosales, Renato Berta, Marc Recha, Catherine Corsini, Agnès Jaoui, Fabrice Aragno, Sylvette Baudrot, Hanna Schygulla… with whom he has held Masterclasses and meetings to analyze their work.
Between 2018 and 2020, he directed "Historias del Cinema" for Betevé, a film analysis program now available on Filmin. As a director, he has made three feature films, winning the Sant Jordi Award for Best First Feature, the FIPRESCI Prize at the Seville European Film Festival, and participating in festivals such as San Sebastián and Mar del Plata.
Study with Luis Aller It means learning from someone who has been in every position: viewer, critic, teacher, director. Someone who understands cinema from theory, but also from the actual practice of making it.
